SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

By 2030, at its current pace of growth, the fashion industry is expected to be worth $3.3 trillion. It will manufacture 102 million tons of clothes and shoes, a weight equivalent to a half million blue whales. If nothing is done, the world is predicted to expect a serious climate-related calamity by 2040. Many coastal region will be sunken, food will face alarming scarcity, coral reefs will be extinct (United Nations).

How is fashion related to the disastrous predictions on our mother earth? The apparel and footwear industries together account for more than 8 percent of global climate impact, greater than all international airline flights and maritime shipping trips combined. It also responsible for a fifth of the global water pollution, and a third of the microfibres/plastics in the oceans.

In the recent year, the industry seems to become more conscious about the environmental issue as some brands decide to jump on the sustainability bandwagon. However, the meteoric rise of “fast fashion” — the business of quickly turning around new collections, often at lower prices to encourage consumption — in particular is proving to be toxic for the environment. Linear systems use large quantities of nonrenewable resources, and more than half of these styles get tossed within a year, according to McKinsey’s 2016 report “Style that’s sustainable: A new fast fashion formula.”

A solution: sustainability production

Thanks nature for the invention of e-commerce crowdfunding, ZORA is utilising this feature as a means to create a sustainable supply chain, therein perfecting the demand and supply match. Only designs that are fully crowdfunded or preordered on our website will be produced and at the exact quantity that matches customers’ orders. This way, ZORA tackles overproduction with just in time manufacturing without jeopardising creativity in fashion, in fact in the contrariwise, cultivating more creativity in the industry as the platform allows designers to launch their brand without the commitment of producing an inventory.
